Please click here to see Penang from my photos...

Penang is one of the 13 states of the Federation of Malaysia; located on the north-west coast of Peninsula Malaysia. It is bounded on the north and east by the state of Kedah, to the South by the State of Perak and to the west by the Straits of Malacca and Sumatra (Indonesia). Penang consists of the island of Penang and a coastal strip on the mainland known as Province Wellesley. The island covering an area of 285 square kilometers, is separated from the mainland by a channel. The island and mainland are linked by the 13.5km long Penang Bridge.

Penang is a place that has many cultures and religion. I can say you can feel many place environment of Malaysia in Penang. Penang is very tolerant of the many religions and faiths, I can feel this when I was in Penang, I can join their cultural and religion celebration, like the Tahipussam, Cap Goh Meh, The Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Waisak Day, Hari Raya Puasa. Among the penang people they respect each other for them to do thei religions. Because of this harmonization, you can really feel comfortable in this island, and I hope this situation will keep like this for future.

My first time in Penang was on April 2004. I was there for 6 months for the project. I did quite many travel that times, cause of the place I stay in the main street of Penang, George Town, and also enjoying the night street food there.

I?ve never thank that I will be back, until I got the second project. It?s from December 2006 until now (April 2007) should be here until June 2007. After about 3 years from the first trip I can said not many different happening in this city, except some new malls but for the nature place remaining the same, only near by the Taman Negara Pulau Pinang they have some new building, hope the progress there will not ruin the nature environment there.

Because of many religions make many religions place in penang, many temples, churches, mosques, and that?s a good place to visit, also the old Chinese history place. Most of the community in penang is Chinese people, Malay people and India people, and some Thai people and Burmese people also start living here.
The place you can visit:
? Acheen Street Mosque
? Church of the Holy Name of Jesus
? Kapitan Kling Mosque
? St. Anne?s Church
? St. George?s Church
? Kek Lok Si Temple
? Khoo Kongsi
? Snake Temple
? Sri Mariamman Temple
? Dharmikarama Burmese Temple

Penang has many historical place, you can walk around in George Town area to visit them. Malaysia government did a good progress to keep all the historical place. Make visitor can still feel the atmosphere of this old story of Penang.
If you like historical place, try to visit:
? Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
? China Town
? Clock Tower, Pesara King Edward
? Penang Islamic Museum
? Esplanade
? Fort Cornwallis
? Proposed Dr Sun Yat-Sen Museum
? Komtar
? The Streets of George Town

For Nature lover, Penang is quite good place, nice beaches here, nice national park (Taman Negara Pulau Pinang), I can say I enjoy the nature environment here. Many wild birds and monkey, insect, butterfly.
Please try to visit this places:

  • Batu Feringgih Beach, nice scenery, many big stone, white sand beaches, nice place to play around here

  • Taman Negara Pulau Pinang. If you like hiking can try this place. Walk around this area, get the fresh air and seeing the local fisherman catching fish, enjoy the song of the birds, sometime can see the monkey play around.

  • Butterfly Farm, quite nice place to see many kind of butterfly and some insect. The entrance fee 15 RM.

  • Tropical Spice Garden, nice place to for the botanical lovers.

  • Botanical Garden, nice garden, actually have a big waterfall (the biggest in Malaysia) but not open for public since 1970. It?s only open every year when the earth day.

Please pay attention for the transportation in this island, please consider to using public bus, quite convenient also but you must wait first until the bus full occupied then the bus will start. Because if you use the taxi it?s quite costly here, cause they did not turn on the meter, they will let you know the price first, you can bargain also, but still very costly. I hope the Malaysia government will pay attention about this or at least the Penang tourism take action for this.
Another transportation you can use Trishaws, this is good things if you want to know the George Town in quick time, try to look around the city by Trishaw.
